Facelifted Land Rover Discovery Sport unmasked

Land Rover has revealed a facelifted version of its best-selling model, the Discovery Sport.

The revised version features JLR’s tax-busting, RDE2-compliant diesel engines, while the company is also offering mild-hybrid powertrains.

Because the front-wheel drive 150hp diesel engine meets the RDE2 testing criteria ahead of its roll-out in 2020, company car drivers will not pay the 4% Benefit-in-Kind surcharge currently levied on other diesels. Emissions for the clean diesel are 140g/km of CO2 and it returns 47.8mpg.

The mild-hybrid powertrain, meanwhile, uses an engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator to harvest energy normally lost during deceleration and stores it in an under-floor battery and is fitted as standard on vehicles with automatic transmissions.

At speeds below 11mph, the engine will shut off when the driver applies the brakes, before redeploying the stored energy to assist the engine under acceleration to reduce fuel consumption. Land Rover said the mild hybrid emits from 144g/km of CO2 and returns up to 40.9mpg.

Styling changes compared with the outgoing model include new LED headlights, a new grille and bumpers.  Inside, new seats have been introduced across each of the three rows to provide improved comfort, while the fuel tank size has been increased to 67 litres.

Other changes compared with the outgoing model include the addition of a ‘smart rear view mirror’ that transforms into a video screen at the flick of a switch to display what is behind the vehicle from a camera mounted above the rear window, while drivers can see what is beneath the vehicle via the touchscreen infotainment system, which Land Rover said will help motorists navigate high kerbs in cities

Rawdon Glover, managing director of Jaguar Land Rover UK, said:. The new model combines everything the Discovery family of vehicles embodies with a greater focus on modern life – whether through the new electrified powertrains, the latest technologies that keep you connected at all times, or the durable materials used throughout the cabin. The result is a compact seven-seat SUV that caters for every family, in every eventuality.”
