Why should I want it?
A special edition to mark 45 years of the Golf GTI, the Clubsport 45 gets a number of upgrades over the ‘regular’ 300hp Clubsport five-door, including a titanium exhaust, new 19-inch alloys, decals, a black roof and spoiler, plus the removal of the 155mph speed limiter.
The larger spoiler is discreet yet macho, and the Clubsport model has an additional 55hp over the Golf GTI, as well as improved brakes, and beefier front bumper
Why can’t I have it?
The Clubsport has pretty stiff suspension that offers little compliance on bumpy back roads in particular. Also, you’re looking at just north of £40,000 for a Golf.
Arguments to use on the fleet manager
The Clubsport 45 has the same efficiency figures as a standard GTI, so there’s no penalty in that regard. The uninitiated are likely to overlook the comparatively understated styling details that mark out the fast Golf (apart from the not-so-subtle decals) and it’s got all the practicality of a 1.0-litre Golf hatch.
More fleety alternative
The Volkswagen Golf GTE plug-in hybrid still has 245hp, so is only 1.1 seconds slower than the Clubsport 45 over the 0-62mph dash. It’s also over £300 cheaper than the Clubsport, but with a company car tax bill that’s more than £400 per month lower for this tax year.
