Ionity reports Covid-related increase in charging provision

Manufacturer-owned EV charging point provider has reported a strong increase in network usage as Europe came out of its Covid-related lockdowns, which it has put down to a change in mobility behaviour in Europe that has helped electric vehicles gain traction.

According to the company, which is jointly owned by BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and the Audi and Porsche Volkswagen Group brands, EV owners have increased their usage, while public transport is no longer seen as a safe way of travelling during the pandemic, motions helped by Government incentives helping establish EVs in many countries.

Usage is now around 80% up on Ionity’s previous busiest period in terms of kWh network usage, which was the 2019 Christmas period.

“Apparently, the pandemic has made people reflect on the way we all travel short and long distance”, says Dr Michael Hajesch, CEO at IONITY.
