VW reveals new SUV coupe ID.5, new car sales continue to suffer amid supply shortages, Skoda seeking new fleet boss

VW reveals new SUV coupe ID.5

Volkswagen has unveiled its third ID-branded electric model, with the ID.5 coupe-SUV due in the UK next year.

The new model will launch with a choice of three motor options, including a high-performance GTX model that gets four-wheel drive rather than the rear-driven regular models.

The ID.5 is 15mm longer than the ID.4 SUV, and VW said that the new model is set apart by its roofline, painted door panelling and striking bumper, while only losing 12mm of headroom in the rear despite the lower roof. A luggage area of 549 litres is a touch more than the ID.4.

Pricing, specification, performance and range will be revealed nearer to launch.

New car sales continue to suffer amid supply shortages

The number of new cars registered in October slumped to the lowest total for the month since 1991 as the worldwide shortage of semiconductors continued to decimate supply.

The 106,265 new cars registered last month, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, represented a 24.6% drop on October 2020, although electric vehicles took a 15.2% market share, with a further 7.9% accounted for by plug-in hybrids. The SMMT said that the rapid uptake of plug-in cars will see more registered in 2021 than 2010-2019 combined.

The SMMT’s forecast for 2021 has been revised downwards by 8.8% in light of the ongoing supply issues, which would see a year-end figure of around 1.66m units, around 650,000 down on the pre-pandemic 2019 figure of 2.3m. For 2022, the expectation is a recovery to around 1.96m units, with plug-in cars accounting for around 21.5%

Skoda seeking new fleet boss

Skoda is looking to appoint a new head of fleet after Henry Williams, who was in the job since April 2016, was promoted to a new role as head of sales transformation for the Volkswagen Group.

National fleet sales manager Matt Hattersley is running the fleet area of the Czech firm’s operation in the interim.
