Sergio Marchionne passes away

Former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles boss Sergio Marchionne has passed away, aged 66.

Marchionne had been the boss of Fiat since 2004 until he was replaced last weekend as his ill health following recent shoulder surgery prevented him from continuing in a leadership role.

He is widely credited for turning the-then struggling car brand around and took the decision to acquire a stake in Chrysler in 2009. Subsequently, Fiat bought out the remaining shares and it has allowed the Italian company to compete with rivals in North America.

“Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone,” confirmed FCA chairman John Elkann, of the controlling Agnelli family, in a statement.
